What do you want them to do?

There’s a Christian guy named Bob in Southeast Asia I heard about who had a program on shortwave radio. While he definitely wanted his listeners to interact with scripture, the way he went about it was kinda genius. He encouraged his listeners to form listening clubs and send in their birthday to him so he could announce them on the radio. He got newsletters going out to his listeners that mixed scripture stuff with sanitation info, stories or other engaging content of local interest. His engagement was off the charts with some of these simple personal touches. Everything he did focused on drawing people together to interact with each other and the content he was providing that included both spiritual and physical topics.

Now obviously birthday celebrations won’t work for the Yawo since nobody seems to know when they were born. But I do love this concept of drawing groups together to interact around a topic. If it isn’t birthdays, could it be shoutouts to their home villages? Favorite local football clubs? What are some common points of interest that draw people together within Yawo culture?

Questions for discussion:

  • What are some shared interests that draw groups of Yawo together?

  • What combination of spiritual and physical/social/educational topics have you seen work well in conjunction with each other? Or NOT so well?

  • Do you agree or disagree with the idea of having groups interact with media material?
