Push vs Pull

From my week 1 reading, there’s an article called “A Weird Question For You” that discusses the “Push vs pull strategy”. When we think about traditional media like TV broadcasting, if you remember that, it was from one to many. You couldn’t choose anything like what you wanted to watch or when to watch it. You had to set your date and time to catch something if you wanted to see it.

I remember growing up feeling this pressure to go out to the streets and preach Jesus. I always cringed at that idea. I know it works for some, but I’m not that guy. I even cringe when I see fellow Christians doing that kind of thing, or handing out tracks. I know God uses all kinds of things and people and personalities though and for that I’m grateful.

Me personally? I have been influenced a lot I think by this idea that there are people out there who are already in this place where they are open, right now, to considering a change in how they view life and eternity. Maybe they are going through a divorce? Just saw a loved one die? Feel like their religion is too hard to ever do right? Or that their faith leaders don’t have the answers they want or won’t even allow them to ask things that are too dangerous?

As I think about this Media to Movements strategy, I don’t think I’m out to convince the Yawo that I’m right and they’re wrong. I’m not trying to be an apologist. I’m merely looking for those who are already feeling a tug of dissatisfaction or something that has caused them to want to seek out answers to their questions that Jesus can fulfill. We all know nobody is just sitting around trolling websites to see what’s new. If someone clicks on what I’m offering up, it’s because they are interested. They are the ones in control, not me pushing the hard sell on an uninterested person.

It somehow takes that burden off of my shoulders that there are these masses of people I’m trying to reach, when in reality we’re really just trying to connect with this guy, and that guy, and this woman over here, and God will do the rest. It’s organic growth.

Question for discussion:

  • What are some areas that you think the Yawo could be dissatisfied with in their life that will cause them to look for answers online?
